How a DCT works
A dual-clutch transmission uses two clutches — one for odd gears, one for even — to pre-select and swap gears almost instantly. That mechanism, plus its mechatronic control unit, has particular fluid needs.
Wet vs. dry clutch
- Wet-clutch DCT — the clutches run in fluid, so the fluid must manage clutch friction and cooling as well as gear lubrication.
- Dry-clutch DCT — the clutches sit outside the fluid, so the gearbox fluid mainly lubricates gears.
Some designs separate gear lubrication from hydraulic control. Match the specification to the exact transmission and circuit, rather than assuming one DCT fluid serves every purpose.
Fluid labels are not replacement approvals
Do not substitute ATF, CVT fluid, or another DCT product based on its category name. Use the exact specification and any replacement approval in the manufacturer's service information. Incorrect friction or lubrication properties can contribute to poor operation and wear.
Servicing a DCT
Keep to the manufacturer's schedule and level-check procedure for the installed transmission. If you notice low-speed shudder or jerkiness, arrange diagnosis rather than assuming a fluid change is the cure. Confirm the specification before any permitted top-up (can you mix?).
