What you'll need
- The exact fluid your manual specifies, and enough of it
- A drain pan, ramps or a lift, wheel chocks
- Basic hand tools; often a new filter and pan gasket
- For sealed units: a scan tool and a fluid pump
Step-by-step (drain-and-fill)
- Warm the transmission, then raise the car level and chock the wheels.
- Position the catch pan and drain — via the drain plug, or by dropping the transmission pan.
- If the pan is off, replace the filter and gasket, and wipe the pan and magnet clean.
- Reinstall and refill with the correct fluid through the fill point.
- Start the engine, cycle through the gears, and set the level on the HOT range.
Safety first
Never work under a car on a jack alone — use stands or a lift. Warm fluid is hot; wear gloves. Keep the level accurate to avoid overfilling.
