Transmission fluid is a specialized oil that keeps your transmission running. In an automatic, it's unusual because it does two jobs at once: it's both a lubricant and a hydraulic fluid.
The four jobs it does
- Hydraulic pressure — engages the clutches and bands that change gears.
- Lubrication — protects gears, bearings, and clutch packs from wear.
- Cooling — carries heat away from the friction surfaces.
- Cleaning — suspends tiny wear particles so they don't score parts.
Because it does all four simultaneously, degraded fluid causes a wide spread of symptoms — slipping, delayed shifts, and overheating.
Why it matters
The fluid is what makes an automatic shift smoothly. Let it get low, old, or overheated and the transmission loses the pressure and protection it depends on — which is how a cheap fluid service turns into an expensive rebuild.
