ATF+4 Transmission Fluid: What It Is & Uses

Own a Jeep, Ram, Dodge, or Chrysler? Identify the year and transmission before buying fluid. The badge alone does not tell you whether ATF+4 is required.

What ATF+4 is

ATF+4 is a named automatic transmission fluid specification. Treat it as a requirement only when your owner's manual or current factory service information specifies it for the component being serviced.

Which vehicles use it

Older and newer applications can differ even within one model. The 2012 Grand Cherokee automatic specifies Mopar ATF+4 or an equivalent licensed ATF+4 product (2012 manual, p. 624). The 2014 Grand Cherokee 8-speed specifies Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF or equivalent (2014 manual, p. 622).

Why substitutes cause trouble
