Why a running engine matters
With the engine off, fluid drains back into the pan and the dipstick reads artificially high or inconsistent. Idling keeps the fluid where it normally sits when you drive, which is the level you actually want to measure.
The exceptions
- Neutral instead of Park — a few models specify Neutral. Always check your manual.
