Check Transmission Fluid With Engine On or Off?

There is no universal engine-on or engine-off rule. Check warm using the procedure for your exact transmission.

An engine-running example

For the 2011 Econoline automatic, Ford specifies a warm check with the engine running in Park; see the 2011 Ford Econoline owner's manual, pages 284–286. Follow the complete manual procedure for that vehicle.

An engine-off example

For the 2011 Accord automatic, Honda specifies warming until the radiator fan comes on, shutting off, then waiting about 60 seconds, but no longer than 90 seconds, before checking; see the 2011 Honda Accord owner's manual, page 357.

Do not transfer either example to another model year or transmission. An engine-off reading is not inherently wrong; it must match the procedure the manufacturer specifies.

When the owner is not expected to check

If your manual directs level checks to a dealer, follow that instruction; see the hot-or-cold guide for a scoped example.

If your manual does not provide an owner check, obtain the applicable service procedure or arrange service. Do not assume a fill cap is a dipstick or open a level plug without those instructions.

Before taking a reading

Use your manual to establish the warm-up condition, parking precautions, selector position, engine state, and any time limit. Then follow its dipstick-reading instructions. A reading obtained under different conditions should be verified before adding fluid.
