Reading a transmission dipstick takes a few seconds once you know what you're looking at.
The procedure
- Warm the car to normal operating temperature and leave it idling in Park on level ground.
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, and reinsert it fully.
- Pull it again and read the fluid film against the marks.
Wiping and reinserting matters — the first pull is smeared and inaccurate.
Reading the marks
Most dipsticks print two ranges:
- HOT — the accurate reading once the transmission is warmed up. Use this to decide whether to add fluid.
- COLD — a rough guide only, for a cold first look.
The fluid should sit between the min and max of the correct range. Right at MAX is fine; above MAX is overfilled.
Judging color and condition
Wipe a little fluid onto a white paper towel:
- Bright red — healthy
- Brown / dark brown — aging or overdue
- Black + burnt smell — overheated; service now
- Pink / milky — coolant contamination; stop driving
