Where Is the Transmission Dipstick? (How to Find It)

Where to look
On most rear-wheel-drive cars and trucks, the transmission dipstick is toward the back of the engine bay, closer to the firewall. On front-wheel-drive cars it's often off to one side, near the transaxle. Look for a red or yellow loop handle — automakers color it to stand out.
Transmission vs. engine-oil dipstick
- Engine oil — usually toward the front of the engine, black/yellow handle, oil-can icon.
- Transmission — usually farther back, red/yellow loop, sometimes labeled "ATF" or "Trans."
If you pull one and the fluid is red, that's transmission fluid. Engine oil is amber to brown.
